Root Measurements

Root Measurements are individual measurements from five fundamental reference points of one's body. These measurements are:

  • Bust Circumference
  • Waist Circumference
  • Hip Circumference
  • Center Back Length
  • Waist to Ankle Length

If you are not familiar with these measurements, you might find the instructions on these links below to be useful.

Preparation Before Taking the Measurements:

  • Wear undergarment, leotard, or form-fitting body suit to help get accurate body measurements.

Where is the Bust Measurement Taken?

Use the Breast as the Reference.

Round the fullest part of the bust, with the tape parallel to the floor. Measure close to the skin without binding.

Where is the Waist Measurement Taken?

For Natural Waist:

For naturally indented waist, round waist with the measuring tape close to the skin. Be sure that this is where your body compresses the most.

If you are not very sure where the waistline is, tie a piece of string (preferably elastic) around the waist, and bend from side to side until the string settles in the indented part of your waist.

Where is the Hip Measurement Taken?

Hipline

Hip (sometimes it is also called Full Hip) is the fullest part of the hip. You will find it between abdomen and crotch. Usually, it is where the buttocks protrude the most. Measure the hip circumference close to the skin.

How to Measure Center Back Length?

Center Back Measurement:

The purpose of measuring Center Back is to get the vertical measurement of your bodice. Center Back is the vertical length taken from Center Back Neck Point (Cervical Vertebra or C7) to the Waistline level (see figure). The measurement is made only when the head is erected.

To take a proper measurement of Center Back, you should find 2 reference points: Cervical Vertebra (C7) and Waistline.

Waist To Ankle (WTA) Measurement:

Waist To Ankle length is the vertical length taken from Waistline level to the Ankle (see figure). To take a proper measurement of WTA, you should find 2 reference points: Waistline and Ankle.
